Multi-agency support for Talent

Many teams leave the recruitment process till later, avoiding the various challenges of maturation by recruiting from 16+. In such cases, the roles of schools and feeder clubs become even more important. Getting this right ensures a steady stream of well-prepared recruits, equipped to meet the challenges and optimally benefit from the Academy environment. Getting it wrong leads to high turn-over and drop-out due to the mistaken recruitment of ‘fool’s gold’.

Grey Matters’ multi-agency approach works to build Shared Mental Models (SMM’s) across the different stake-holders, ensuring a common and optimum focus for athletes and parents in their first steps on the performance pathway. As an additional ‘value added’ extra, the psychological techniques and work on the development culture provide additional benefits for targeted performers and their peers alike. These benefits show in school work, other activities/sports or just in general lifestyle.

Iain Simpson, Director of Sport Oakham School Working with Grey Matters has allowed us to examine the whats, whys and hows of talent development within a school environment and to combine a practitioner approach with grounded research. Developing and embedding Psychological Skills of Developing Excellence (PCDEs) in what we do has developed coaches and athletes alike and most importantly aligns us with where we should be in the pre-academy space. The skills and behaviours that can be taught now not only facilitate development along the pathway, they are also what it takes to stay at the top once you get there. As a school we aim to provide a challenging experience for all students that allows them to reach their potential, whatever that might be. Our work with GM has allowed me as Programme Director to re-evaluate our priorities and to take a broader and longer term approach. Ultimately, this allows us to put athletes in the best position possible before they graduate from school sport to academy and elite participation.
